March 8, 2013 – Encinitas, CA – Students at Rancho Encinitas Academy (REA) completed the first series of their virtual running and walking club by tracking their miles for the month of February.  Top prizes were awarded for weekly gains and overall mileage.

Using a free technology tool from Racetracker.ca, students were able to create a personalized account, enter their mileage and graphically compare their results.  For example, the Percentile Finish feature allows participants to see how they finished against others in their age group, gender or overall.

All of the running and walking was completed off campus, outside school hours.  The idea for the club came from the REA parent group volunteers who were brainstorming ways to encourage exercise and good health in a fun way.  “These ideas in combination with a virtual exercise program I was personally involved in lead us to the idea of trying out a virtual program at our school,” said Belinda Solowiej whose daughter Katie earned a first place trophy for overall mileage.  “Our family would take longer walks and jogs during the weekend, and shorter weekday walks around the block with our dog.  Our dog was most appreciative!  It really showed how just walking short distances more often really adds up the mileage and we all enjoyed the family time,” Solowiej says.

As a culminating event to February’s competition, families participated in Chelsea’s Run, an annual 5K run/walk fundraiser benefiting the Chelsea’s Light Foundation Sunflower Scholarship Fund.

An awards ceremony was held on campus where studeVirtual Running Club 3nts received certificates, medals and trophies for their accomplishments.  Gus Moss-King, fourth grade, received an award for Highest Weekly Gain in week four of the competition.

Theresa Hooker, fifth grade, received the same award for the girls.  Overall mileage first-place trophies were presented to Gus

Moss-King and Katie Solowiej, third grade.
