Students bag food for 1,400 children and 1,200 pounds of produce for School Pantry Program and military families

April 19, 2013 – Encinitas, CA – Students from Rancho Encinitas Academy (REA) middle school participated in a community service program in conjunction with Feeding America San Diego, an organization that strives to provide food assistance to those who need it most.

Feeding America San Diego has several programs for kids, families and seniors including the School Pantry Program which, still in its pilot phase, equips schools to operate as a partner agency would.  With support from grant funds ranging from $5,000 – $10,000, schools are able to shop online from Feed America San Diego’s inventory of fresh produce.  Volunteers – in this case the REA students – sort, repack and perform quality control on all of the food once it enters the Feeding America San Diego warehouse.  The School Pantry Program allows schools to provide ongoing support to the students and their families at their school, and a safe and easy place for busy parents to access food resources.

After a long but fun day of volunteer work, REA students ended up bagging enough food to feed 1,400 children and sorted and repacked 1,200 pounds of produce.  Anyone interested in volunteering their time or donating to Feeding America San Diego, may visit www.feedingamerica.org and click the “Get Involved” link.
