In conjunction with etsy.com, a popular e-commerce website focused on handmade items, students at Rancho Encinitas Academy and Edison Academy created handmade Valentine’s Day cards for elderly people living in New York City.  Each year, the staff at Etsy brings nutritious meals, handmade greeting cards and companionship to the elderly through Citymeals-on-Wheels.  After receiving submissions and donations from all over the country, an Esty staff member hand-delivers each card with a meal in time for Valentine’s Day.

Students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade prepared the cards at school under the direction of their art teacher, Michelle Pugh.  “I love the special delivery project that Etsy puts together every year in New York City,” says Pugh.  “This year I asked my K-8 art students to help me and I was overwhelmed at how touching these cards were. The students really put their hearts into this project to help brighten someone’s day,” she adds.  Citymeals-on-Wheels is one of the largest meals-on-wheels programs in the U.S., serving 18,000 elderly New Yorkers each year.
